Zerkwitzer Osterreiten

Each Easter Sunday, the Sorbian Catholics of the Spreewald ride out from Zerkwitz to proclaim the Resurrection. Twenty to thirty riders in traditional dress bear white flags with red crosses through the villages, in a celebration of the ancient Sorbian Osterreiten of this Brandenburg region.
The Osterreiten is an ancient Lesussian (Sorbian) Easter ritual. It originated in Catholic Upper Lusatia but was brought to the Protestant Spreewald village of Zerkwitz in the 1990s as a revival of older field-riding (Schutzritus) traditions. The custom is imbued with Christian and pre-Christian symbolism: riders carry the Easter message, using evergreen wreaths symbolizing life and hope. Women may also participate in Zerkwitz (unlike some other regions)....
Visitors are expected to be quiet and respectful (the event is a religious rite). Modest dress is advised, especially at church services. No eating/drinking in the procession; participants and congregation observe Christian customs.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.

Some celebrations are best approached quietly: arrive prepared, follow posted rules, and leave without turning the moment into content.
