Each December 26, on St. Stephen's Day, the village of Sanzoles fills with the Zangarrón. The masked figure in a multicolored rag suit, black mask, and trident strides through the village ringing his great bells, in a celebration that is one of the ancient winter masquerades of the Tierra del Vino.

Procession of San Esteban

Visitors gather in the church square to witness the image of San Esteban being paraded at mid-day. Participants dance traditional reels ("El Baile del Niño") before and after the statue; when the Zangarrón reunites with the dance circle afterwards, he performs a mocking homage and continues to chase young men playing,.

Dawn Dance and Bell-Ringing

Spectators see the masked Zangarrón in full costume dancing with the tambourine player around sunrise. After the dance he flees to sleep briefly, while other locals stay up all night playing bells (cencerros) until morning. Visitors early can hear this cacophony of bells signaling new year blessings.

Final Chase and Dance

Attendees watch as the Zangarrón lifts his arms triumphantly after the Mass, then joins the traditional dance circle. Afterwards he continues his symbolic chase through the square. Visitors can walk alongside local dancers or respectfully observe as the devilish figure runs amid the crowd.
