Each year on Ascension Day, Venice renews its ancient "marriage to the sea," when the doge once cast a golden ring into the waters to wed the city to the Adriatic. A grand procession of rowing boats sails out to the Lido for the ring-casting ceremony, in a maritime rite that has bound Venice to the sea for a thousand years.
