Praying and singing along the road to the shrine of the Black Madonna, they keep the oldest and most famous of Poland's great walking pilgrimages, dating back over three centuries.

Praying and singing along the road to the shrine of the Black Madonna, they keep the oldest and most famous of Poland's great walking pilgrimages, dating back over three centuries.
The pilgrimage draws largely Polish participants devoted to the Black Madonna of Jasna Góra. It is often called the "mother of Polish pilgrimages", reflecting Poland’s Catholic heritage. According to sources, it originated in 1711 as a vow for deliverance from plague, and saints, popes, and bishops have led the pilgrimage through wars and communism.
Modest dress required (no shorts/strappy tops) when entering the shrine; pilgrims typically carry local flags or crosses
