Each year, thousands of young pilgrims walk through the night from Zagreb to the great shrine of Our Lady of Bistrica, Croatia's national Marian sanctuary. Singing and praying along the way, they gather at the church of the miraculous Virgin, in a youth pilgrimage that has drawn the faithful since the early 1700s.

Marija Bistrica became a central Marian shrine after a miraculous statue of the Virgin was found in 1684. Over centuries, it grew into the Croatian National Shrine of Our Lady of Bistrica. The youth pilgrimage reflects this heritage: in 1935 Archbishop Bauer crowned the statue and proclaimed Mary Queen of the Croats, linking the event to national identity.
