The story behind it
Vinhais has a long tradition of curing meats, dating back to when each farm processed its own pork for winter preservation. The fair grew out of local slaughter festivals and was institutionalized in 1981. It serves as a vital link to agrarian customs: the curing process (fumeiro) is deeply ingrained in Transmontano identity, so this event is both an economic showcase and a cultural remembrance of preindustrial rural life.
