Each year before Lent, the Tuscan seaside town of Viareggio holds a carnival famous for its colossal papier-mâché floats, towering moving caricatures of politicians and the famous. Crowds line the seafront promenade as the satirical giants roll past, in a celebration the town has built, float by float, since 1873.
