Vertep is a centuries-old Ukrainian Christmas tradition dating back to the 16th–17th centuries. Originally a mobile puppet theater, in western Ukraine it evolved into live processions and folk performances. Lviv – a historic cultural capital – embraces these customs each winter. The festival is part of Lviv’s broader holiday celebrations, alongside the Didukh (symbolic sheaf), star parades and caroling, reflecting the city’s identity and faith.
This is a religious folk celebration; visitors should observe reverently during sacred scenes (remove hats, speak softly) and be respectful of the Nativity portrayals.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
