Venlo’s carnival is rooted in the regional pre-Lenten tradition (Vastelaovend). Local dialect songs and customs predominate, and months of preparation (prinsenverkiezing, '11 van 11 van 11' opening) precede the main festivities. Traditional foods (Limburgse vlaai, pea soup) and distinctive home-made costumes set it apart from other carnival styles.
