Each year before Lent, the city of Venice slips behind its masks for one of the world's most famous carnivals. Elaborate costumes and gilded masks fill the canals and squares, building to grand balls and ceremonies on St. Mark's Square, in a festival of mystery and spectacle going back nearly a thousand years.

The 1979 revival by Mayor Mario Rigo, with Biennale-Teatro and government support, restored the Carnival within the post-war era of cultural revival and institutional support.

Very crowded at main squares (San Marco, Rialto); peripheral areas less dense but still busy.

Actv vaporetto (Lines 1, 2) on canals; buses and tram from Mestre to Piazzale Roma; Venice People Mover (automated tram) to Tronchetto.
