Each year before Lent, the city of Venice slips behind its masks for one of the world's most famous carnivals. Elaborate costumes and gilded masks fill the canals and squares, building to grand balls and ceremonies on St. Mark's Square, in a festival of mystery and spectacle going back nearly a thousand years.
