This festival originates from historic rural carnival customs. During pre-war carnivals, masked villagers (called 'vaquillas') roamed in colorful costumes to play pranks on locals. The tradition was suppressed after the Spanish Civil War and by mid-20th century had disappeared. It has been actively revived by Gajanejos residents since 2008 to reconnect with their cultural heritage.
