The festival is deeply rooted in Appenzell pastoral life. After months of summer grazing, farmers and their families celebrate the safe return of their animals, reaffirming their bond with the Alps and with traditional cattle husbandry. Participants wear elaborate traditional Appenzell folk costumes (Trachten) and perform yodeling and 'Zäuerli' songs, reinforcing regional identity.
