This holiday celebrates Ukraine’s declaration of independence on August 24, 1991. In Kyiv it is also seen as a day of remembrance for the soldiers who fought for that independence. Citizens wear national embroidery (vyshyvanka) and yellow-blue colors. The ongoing war has infused additional meaning: events often honor fallen defenders and emphasize unity and resilience.
Visitors should dress modestly and in national colors. Remove hats indoors (especially churches) and be solemn during anthems and ceremonies.
