Tyrnavos Carnival (Bourani)

Τυρναβίτικο Καρναβάλι – Μπουρανί

Tyrnavos, Greece

Mar 15 - 22, 2027Expected

On Clean Monday, the town of Tyrnavos throws one of Greece's bawdiest carnivals, the Bourani. Men and women cook a communal soup in giant cauldrons and carry frank phallic symbols through the streets in a frankly ribald fertility rite, with roots in ancient pagan custom, that the town has never been shy about keeping.
