Grindadráp
Tvøroyri, Faroe Islands
Each year, when pilot whales enter its bays, the village of Tvøroyri takes part in the Faroese grindadráp. Villagers drive the whales ashore in a communal hunt for meat and blubber, in a practice with deep roots in this old settlement of the southern island of Suðuroy.
As one of the older settlements in Suðuroy, Tvøroyri has a long history of whaling. The grindadráp is seen as a hard-won local ritual rather than a tourist event. It takes place at community beaches where residents gather to drive the whales and then butcher them. The fishery is managed under Faroese law and the catch is owned by those who participate.
This is a private subsistence hunt. Outsiders should carefully respect locals' privacy and the solemn nature of the hunt.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.

Some celebrations are best approached quietly: arrive prepared, follow posted rules, and leave without turning the moment into content.
