Each year, the Folk Song Hill of Turaida near Sigulda fills with the dainas of Latvia. The sculpture park of stone figures hosts kokle music at sunrise and communal sing-alongs at sunset, in a celebration of the folk songs that lie at the very heart of Latvian identity.
Folk songs (dainas) are central to Latvian national identity. The Turaida Song Hill displays 26 stone sculptures inscribed with folk song verses. It became a symbol of cultural perseverance: each summer Sunday since 1985 local ensembles held concerts here, contributing to the Singing Revolution. The commemorative events in 2025 are rooted in this grassroots folk revival tradition.
Participants should show respect when at the memorial Song Hill site. Traditionally visitors leave a podia (stick) or flower at dawn on July 7. Treat the sculptures and offerings with reverence.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
