The festival goes back to ancient Dionysian traditions of honoring the grape harvest. In socialist Yugoslavia it was formalized into a large wine harvest festival starting in the 1960s, reflecting the importance of Kavadarci’s viticulture. Tikves has long been called the ‘wine heartland’ of Macedonia, and the festival celebrates this identity each September.
