REGIONAL COMMUNITY & FOLK LIFE
Thüringer Bachwochen
Erfurt, Germany
Each spring, the towns of Thuringia fill their churches with the music of Bach for the Thüringer Bachwochen. Concerts at the historic sites where the composer lived and worked celebrate his legacy, in a celebration set in the land long called Bachland, the cradle of the Bach family.
Thuringia is celebrated as “Bachland” because Bach and his family lived and worked here over generations. The festival situates concerts in authentic Bach venues (e.g., Bach’s birth house, old churches and castles), connecting performances directly to the region’s Baroque history and Thuringian musical heritage.
As many concerts occur in churches, visitors should dress respectfully (no shorts or bare shoulders) and remain quiet during performances. Turn off phones and avoid using flash photography in venues.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
Avoid filming or photographing moments that feel private, sacred, or restricted.
Some celebrations are best approached quietly: arrive prepared, follow posted rules, and leave without turning the moment into content.
