Each pre-Lenten season, the city of Thessaloniki revives its Apokries carnival. After more than half a century without one, the city brought back its parades and parties, with a central themed parade since 2025, in a celebration of the Greek festive season before Orthodox Lent.
Carnival in Greece (Apokries) is a traditional festive season before Orthodox Lent, with parallels to ancient Dionysian customs. In early 20th century Thessaloniki hosted one of the Balkans' largest carnivals. The modern Thessaloniki Carnival reconnects to that heritage with music, dance, and community feasting.
Participants are encouraged to dress in masks or costumes and join the fun. Follow local customs of confetti-throwing and dancing; respect that this is both celebration and community event.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.

Some celebrations are best approached quietly: arrive prepared, follow posted rules, and leave without turning the moment into content.
