Each August 14 the men of Aceitunilla stage a playful theft of basil in the Robu de la Albehaca, a festival of courtship and communal sharing. Rooted in old Hurdano custom, the mock raid carries the village's traditions of pairing and good-natured rivalry.
This event originates from the Hurdano tradition of communal sharing and courtship. 'Galicianos' (the young men) historically stole a sprig of basil for each sweetheart’s window, symbolizing fertility and friendship. Robu de la Albehaca thus reinforces neighborly bonds and Aceitunilla’s identity as a humor-loving, tight-knit community.
Visitors should not interfere with the mock theft or disrupt dancers. Observing respectfully is expected.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
Avoid filming or photographing moments that feel private, sacred, or restricted.
Some celebrations are best approached quietly: arrive prepared, follow posted rules, and leave without turning the moment into content.
