Each New Year's Day, the Zamora village of Riofrío de Aliste stages Los Carochos, a winter masquerade of demons in cork masks. The horned Carocho Grande and Carocho Chiquito and their fellow figures run through the village, in a celebration that belongs to the ancient winter masquerades of this corner of Spain.
