The Swedish National Day commemorates Gustav Vasa’s election as king in 1523 and the 1809 constitution. It is a modern civic holiday (official since 1983). The tradition of celebrating on 6 June started at Skansen in 1893 and became a bank holiday in 2005. Folk costumes, flags and community gatherings reflect national identity.
