steirischer herbst emerged from the postwar neo-avant-garde in Graz, inspired by documenta and driven by Styrian cultural officer Hanns Koren, who also established the Steirische Akademie (1960) and the trigon biennial (1963). The 1967 precursor event series brought these initiatives together under the name Steirischer Herbst — a title Koren took from a poem by Hans Kloepfer, a Styrian dialect poet who was also a Völkisch nat...
