Each year on the last evening of April, Finland erupts into Vappu, its great spring carnival, when students don white caps and the whole country takes to the streets. Part Workers' Day and part ancient welcome to spring, it fills Helsinki with picnics, sparkling wine, and revelry, in the biggest party of the Finnish year.

Vappu merges the ancien Régime of Walpurgis Night (pagan spring rites) with May Day labor and student traditions.
