Stolac’s Ilindan reflects the long Catholic tradition of honoring St. Elijah (Ilija) as protector of Herzegovinian Croats. In 1752, the Catholic bishop of Bosnia petitioned Rome to recognize St. Elijah as the patron of the Bosnian realm, noting that “Orthodox and Muslims venerate him too”. Since then, Ilija’s feast has symbolized shared cultural heritage. Folk beliefs tie St. Elijah to weather: he “commands lightning and rain” and is invoked against storm...
