Purmerend, Netherlands
Each November the town of Purmerend welcomes Sinterklaas, who arrives by steamboat at the harbor as his helpers roam the streets handing out sweets to children. Part of the cherished Dutch Sinterklaas tradition, the intocht turns the town's quayside into a day of childhood wonder.
This event is part of the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition: Saint Nicholas tours cities each November followed by evening celebrations on Dec 5. Purmerend’s intocht is described locally as ‘een van de meest feestelijke gebeurtenissen van het jaar’ and involves the whole community. The arrival parade and festivities are a cherished annual family tradition tied to the region’s winter culture.
Be respectful to local customs. Greet Sinterklaas politely and be considerate with children. Note that modern Dutch celebrations often use "soot-smudged" Pieten instead of traditional blackface to avoid offense.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.

Some celebrations are best approached quietly: arrive prepared, follow posted rules, and leave without turning the moment into content.
