Kirchdorf in Tirol, Austria
Each December 4, the village of Kirchdorf in Tirol welcomes St. Nicholas and then a wild Devils' Run. The benevolent saint arrives before masked Krampus figures storm the square, in a celebration that joins the gentle and the fearsome sides of the Tyrolean Advent.
This is a variation of Tyrolean Advent customs combining the benevolent St. Nicholas with darker devilish masks. The 'Tuifl' represent the wild side of ancient tradition (akin to Perchten and Krampus) and are typically part of local brotherhoods. Such runs are thought to have roots in pre-Christian rituals to warn children into good behavior and to purify the community.
Part of an age-old tradition; crowds should expect loud noises and dress warmly. It’s family-friendly overall.
