Each carnival, the village of Sochos near Thessaloniki fills with the deafening Koudounoforoi. Some three thousand villagers don goatskins and great bells and shake the streets with sound, in a celebration descended from ancient fertility rites and the agrarian past of the region.

Visitors observe and may join the lively mock wedding procession and dances that proceed from local houses to the central square, complete with traditional costumes and music.

The Sochos carnival is rooted in ancient fertility rites and agrarian traditions.
