Śmigustne Dziady (Strawmen Easter Monday Ritual) in Dobra

Dziady Śmigustne w Dobrej

Dobra, Poland

Apr 6, 2026ExpectedSource

Before sunrise on Easter Monday, the Małopolska village of Dobra fills with the Śmigustne Dziady, young men wrapped in straw and crude masks who roam the center making rattling sounds. The strange rite springs from a 13th-century legend of Tatar captives whose cut tongues left them able only to mutter.

How we decide

Key moments

Rise of the Dziady

Visitors (mainly local) watch or try to gently douse the dziady with water. The dziady demand eggs and baked goods from stouthearted women – a playful ‘ransom’ for those who wish to escape being soaked. It’s a rare chance for outsiders to see this old-world masquerade in action.
