When conductor Ivan Pařík founded the Smetana Festival in Plzeň in 1981, he chose a city with a deep personal connection to Bedřich Smetana: the composer had lived there from 1840 to 1843, studying at the local lyceum and playing violin in the choir of St. Bartholomew's Church.
