Carnival in Catalonia has medieval roots but Sitges developed its modern form in the 1950s, growing into one of Europe’s largest gay-friendly Carnivals. It blends traditional Iberian Carnaval customs (like mocking pageantry and bonfires) with the town’s reputation for creativity and tolerance. The debut locally friendly rivalry between two clubs, El Retiro and Prado Suburense, has fueled the annual parades for decades.
