Each August, the Algarve town of Silves turns back the clock beneath its great red sandstone castle for a nine-day medieval fair. Knights, merchants, and musicians fill the old streets in period costume, reviving the days when Silves was a jewel of Moorish and then Christian rule in southern Portugal.
