St. John’s Day (Jāņi) is rooted in ancient Latvian pagan solstice rites. It centers on honoring nature, the sun, and fertility: people wear wreaths of birch/oak leaves, pick medicinal herbs and spend the shortest night of the year in song and dance by a bonfire. After Christianization it merged with St. John’s Day traditions.
Dress modestly and festively, observe local customs (e.g., joining the circle respectfully), and handle fire safely. Do not disturb ritual isles or herb wreaths.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
