Each Shrovetide, the lakeside town of Trakai celebrates Užgavėnės with masquerade and ritual. Costumed figures stage the duel of Lašininis and Kanapinis, the battle of winter against spring, in a celebration that blends old pagan winter-warding with the eve of Lent.

Devils, Pancakes and Kisses Village

Visitors mingle among costumed villagers, sample traditional pancakes (blynai) and enjoy live music and games in a festive outdoor bazaar.

Masquerade Parade

Spectators line the streets as costumed groups register and march from the Cultural Center square towards the Town Hall Square, chanting and dancing.

Morė’s Piršlybos Ceremony

Attendees witness the famed duel of Kanapinis (spring) versus Lašininis (winter) followed by the ceremonial burning of the straw Morė figure, a joyous act to banish winter.
