Each Shrovetide, the Samogitian village of Plateliai keeps one of Lithuania's largest and most traditional Užgavėnės. Carved masks and ancient customs fill the day, in a celebration so deeply rooted in the Žemaitija region that it has become a touchstone of the old carnival.
