Each autumn, the town of Mittenwald welcomes its sheep down from the alpine meadows with the Schafabtrieb. Shepherds and villagers in Bavarian Tracht lead the decorated flock through town to the Schafstadl, with a prize for the finest sheep, in a celebration that closes the Karwendel farmers' weeks.

An integral part of the Karwendel “Bauernwochen” (farmers’ weeks), the sheep drive (Schafabtrieb) celebrates the end of the summer’s alpine grazing. It highlights traditional values of alpine farming and community cohesion. Local music bands and Trachtenverein participants reinforce Bavarian cultural identity.
