Each Easter Sunday, the city of Florence sends a cart of fireworks roaring to life for the Scoppio del Carro. A dove-shaped rocket ignites the ornate cart before the cathedral, in a ritual over nine centuries old that recalls a Florentine knight's return from the First Crusade.
This event commemorates a legend from the First Crusade: the Florentine knight Pazzino de’Pazzi brought back flints from Jerusalem in 1099. His gift of fire to the Baptistery became ritualized into Easter celebrations. Florence’s citizens re-enacted this by building the kart (first in current form in 1622) and lighting it from the Holy Fire, a key part of the ceremony.
Stand respectfully during sacred ceremonies; modest dress for those attending Mass.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
