Carnevale di Sciacca
Sciacca, Italy
Each late winter, the Sicilian town of Sciacca stages one of the island's grand carnivals. Massive papier-mâché floats and costumed masked groups parade through the streets before Lent, in a celebration descended from old fertility festivities that bursts with music and satire.
Rooted in medieval and Baroque fertility celebrations, the Sciacca Carnival embodies Sicilian pre-Lenten tradition. Palermitano folklorist Pitrè noted its existence in the 19th century, and it has become a symbol of civic pride. It helps reinforce local identity as Sciaccensi joyfully gather to showcase creativity and satirical art that often comments on social or political themes.
