Santiago de Compostela Saint John’s Eve Bonfires

Noite de San Xoán

On St. John's Eve the old town of Santiago de Compostela lights dozens of bonfires, the cacharelas, in its plazas and streets, which residents leap to ward off evil. The Noite de San Xoán belongs to the wide Iberian tradition of midsummer fire on the shortest night of the year.
