Originally a local fishermen’s tradition to race back from the sea, the horse races became institutionalized in the 19th century. They coincide with celebrations of the local patron saint, featuring attached processions and flower carpets in town. Declared an event of International Touristic Interest, it highlights Sanlúcar’s maritime culture blended with its famous equestrian heritage (the Andalusian horse).
