Each year, the town of Gacko gathers gusle players and epic poets from across Republika Srpska. Singers perform long heroic verses to the drone of the one-string gusle, in a celebration of an instrument and an art that lie at the heart of South Slavic epic poetry.

The gusle is a traditional one-string bowed instrument central to South Slavic epic poetry. In Bosnia and neighboring Serbia and Montenegro, guslars recite historic epics (e.g. Kosovo cycle) that convey national history and values. The gusle tradition was formalized into competitions in the 20th century, and in Bosnia (Republika Srpska) the Festival guslara has been held each year since 1994.
