The festival celebrates Rab’s liberation from Venetian rule and its medieval heritage. In 1364 Rab’s city council instituted a multi-day 'fiera' in honor of King Louis the Great and St. Christopher. Historical records show Rab repeatedly opened its gates and held free public celebrations on July 25–27 (saints’ feast days) until the mid-19th century.
