Otepää, Estonia
Each midsummer, the shores of Lake Pühajärv near Otepää blaze with bonfires for the Jaanituli. Ancient solstice customs and folk games mingle with contemporary music by the water, in a celebration of Jaanipäev, the great turning point of the Estonian summer.
Midsummer (Jaanipäev) is rooted in pre-Christian solstice rituals. In Estonia it marks the beginning of haymaking and is associated with fertility rites. Lighting bonfires and dancing around them are age-old customs intended to ward off evil and ensure prosperity.
Dress for cool nights, respect bonfire jumpers (do not cross fire unexpectedly), and keep the countryside clean. Do not bring glass bottles (safety).
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
