Each year, on its patron saint's day, the Ikarian village of Vrakades throws an all-night panigyri. Folk music, local wine, and great circles of dancing carry on until dawn, in a celebration that joins a Christian feast to the island's ancient, almost Dionysian love of festivity.

Panigyria are deeply rooted in Ikarian culture, combining Christian saint feasts with ancient Dionysian festivities. They foster intergenerational bonds: elders lead the dances and younger villagers join, keeping every family and visitor united in the circle. Such feasts historically financed infrastructure by pooling communal labor and offerings.
Guests should dress modestly for the church (cover shoulders) and may join the dance only after being welcomed. Follow locals’ lead in dances and song.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
