Each carnival, the village of Podence comes alive with its rattling Caretos. Masked figures in fringed suits hung with cowbells chase through the streets to mark the end of winter, in a celebration of the ancient Trás-os-Montes folklore that has made the Entrudo Chocalheiro famous.
