Each August 28 and 29, the Arga mountains above Caminha fill with pilgrims for the Romaria de São João d'Arga. Devotion gives way to spontaneous music and festivity at the medieval sanctuary, in a celebration set in a range with a long pastoral tradition in northern Portugal.

Visitors can observe or join the devout pilgrims performing this ancient ritual at the chapel's courtyard. It is highly symbolic of faith and gratitude, reflecting the community’s traditional beliefs.

Festive Mass and Final Procession

Visitors may attend the service respectfully to observe the devout local community or join the procession marking the feast of St. John.

Evening Concertinas and Cantigas ao Desafio

Visitors experience a vibrant cultural gathering: enjoying folk music, dancing in community circles, and sampling local specialties (honey brandy “xiripiti”, broa bread, chouriço, roast goat, vinho verde) as the local people do.
