Each winter, the port city of Patras throws Greece's biggest and most flamboyant carnival, weeks of parades, balls, and treasure hunts before Lent. Huge handmade floats and costumed crews fill the streets, in a celebration shaped since the 1800s by Venetian flair and a love of satire and spectacle.
