Panagia Evangelistria is central to Tinos’s identity. The local economy, architecture and social life revolve around devotion to the Virgin Mary. On August 15, pilgrims from all over Greece flock to Tinos in faith, renewing traditions such as scattering rice at the feast and lighting candles at the church. The day is also a national public holiday; in villages across Greece the Dormition is called the “Easter of summer” for its scale.
