Twice each summer, the city of Siena packs its great shell-shaped Piazza del Campo for the Palio, a bareback horse race among the city's historic neighborhoods. Ten riders tear around the square in barely ninety seconds, but the rivalry, pageantry, and passion behind it run through every day of Sienese life.
