Each May Day, the Cornish port of Padstow gives itself over to one of Britain's most famous folk customs, when two great hobby horses dance through the streets. The fearsome Old Oss and the rival Blue Ribbon Oss sweep through the crowds all day, drawing tens of thousands to a rite as old as anyone can remember.

Each May 1st (or 2nd if the 1st falls on a Sunday), Padstow natives and visitors dress the town with greenery and May decorations. At midnight before May Day the community sings the “Night Song” at the Golden Lion Inn. The next day, two teams (each descended in lineage) emerge from their stables (Old Oss from the Golden Lion Inn and Blue Ribbon Oss from the Padstow Institute) and parade through Padstow in white costumes and floral trim.
